Fortune: These Austin-area tech companies among nation’s best places to work

Central Texas technology companies made a strong showing in Fortune magazine’s latest list of the best small companies to work for.

Four of the top-20 companies are locally based and Georgetown software makerAgileCraft LLC topped the list. The company’s software platform enables users of the Agile development tool to use them on a larger scale. Perks include free food and drinks, a “virtual happy hour” every Friday to connect geographically dispersed workers and a casual dress code. The company also covers up to $7,200 each year in employees’ medical costs.

Austin-based AcademicWorks Inc., a scholarship management software maker, ranks No. 3, and BP3 Global Inc., a maker of business process management software, ranks No. 8 on the roster of U.S. companies employing 10-99 workers.

Square Root Inc., a 49-person Austin developer of a retailer software, ranks No. 16 on Fortune’s list that is based upon 52,000 responses to a survey conducted by the Great Place to Work Institute. No local companies are among the 50 medium-size businesses named in the magazine’s Nov. 1 issue.

In January, AcademicWorks, Square Root and BP3 Global were ranked by Fortune among the five best small tech companies in which to work. At the time, AcademicWorks took the No. 1 spot. The ranking was based on worker surveys about career development opportunities, work-life balance, compensation and other factors.
